LEN CONGRESS IN ZüRICH NORY KRUCHTEN IS THE NEW LEN PRESIDENT ; EC 2010 IN BUDAPEST; UNICEF AND LEN Link: LEN Bureau and Technical Committees Zürich (pps) The European Swimming Federation, LEN, has a new leader for the next five years. 64-year-old Nory Kruchten of Luxembourg, who has acted as LEN Treasurer since 1992, succeeds Italian Bartolo Consolo, who no longer stood for re-election at the LEN Congress in Zürich after 18 years at the helm. Kruchten won the Presidential election against Russian Gennady Aleshin. After the Congress Kruchten declared: “I am happy with the trust of our member Federations, particularly because I can begin my term of office in the Bureau with the team I have been wishing for.“ 47 of the 51 LEN Member Federations were represented in Zürich, the Congress was honoured by the presence of FINA President Mustapha Larfaoui, as well as FINA Treasurer, Julio Maglione. LEN increased its governing body, the Bureau, from 15 to 17 Members, and the number of Vice Presidents from two to five, who will each be assigned special tasks. For the first time in the history of LEN (since 1927), a woman is among the Executive Members of LEN which include the President, Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer. 54-year-old German Dr Christa Thiel takes over from Nory Kruchten as Treasurer. Norwegian Sven Egil Folvik, 64, continues as Secretary. The new LEN Bureau: President: Nory Kruchten (Luxembourg) Vice Presidents: Gennady Aleshin (Russia), Dimitris Diathesopoulos (Greece), Tamas Gyarfas (Hungary), Francis Luyce (France), Erik van Heijningen (Netherlands) Secretary: Sven Egil Folvik (Norway) Treasurer: Christa Thiel (Germany) Bureau Members: Paolo Barelli (Italy), Robert Ebejer (Malta), Juan Koninckx Bataller (Spain), Jerzy Kowalski (Poland), Erich Meyer (Switzerland), Kurt Mikkola (Finland), David Sparkes (Great Britain), Ivan Varvodic (Croatia), and Andriy Vlaskov (Ukraine). Bartolo Consolo has been elected Honorary Life President, while Rafael Blanco (Spain), Alan Clarkson (Great Britain) and Toivo Öhman (Sweden) are new Honorary Members of LEN. The European representatives to join the Bureau of the International Swimming Federation, FINA, next year in Rome are Nory Kruchten, Paolo Barelli, Tamas Gyarfas, Dimitris Diathesopoulos, Sven Egil Folvik and Christa Thiel. The newly elected LEN Bureau decided on Sunday afternoon on the composition of the various Technical Committees for the upcoming office term. The complete list of the Committees is attached to the present release. The next LEN Congress will be hosted by the Danish Swimming Federation, in Copenhagen on September 19th of next year. From 2010 onwards, LEN’s most important annual meeting will take place in springtime (May/June). 2010 European Swimming Championships in Budapest Zürich (pps) The 2010 European Championships in Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming and Open Water Swimming will be hosted once again in Budapest between August 4th and 15th. The allocation was announced by the LEN Bureau before the elections at the LEN Congress last weekend in Zürich. The Hungarian capital will stage European Swimming Championships for the fourth time, after the inaugural event in 1926 and the 1958 and 2006 editions. No other city has hosted four European Swimming Championships. According to a further decision of the LEN Bureau, European Diving Championships will be held annually in the future and will replace the former Arena European Diving Champions Cup. In odd years this competition will be staged separately as an independent event, however in even years the diving discipline will continue to be an integral part of the European Swimming Championships. The first edition of the European Diving Championships will take place in Turin, from April 1st to 5th 2009. The next European Water Polo Championships for Men and Women will be hosted by the Croatian capital, Zagreb, on September 3rd to 12th 2010. LEN seals partnership with UNICEF Zürich (pps) LEN and UNICEF have sealed their continuing partnership. On occasion of the LEN Congress in Zürich, both organisations have signed a four-year partnership agreement. LEN FOR UNICEF will emphasise the importance of water and sanitation projects, the existing frame of collaboration between LEN and UNICEF, and the opportunities for development through the involvement of national entities. As Hans Olsen, Deputy Director of UNICEF Geneva (in charge of National Committee Relations, and Private Fundraising and Partnerships), explained in Zurich, 2.6 billion people (40 percent of the World’s population) are lacking basic sanitation facilities. LEN’s engagement will contribute to putting emphasis on the urgency of providing safe water and sanitation to children all over the World. Bartolo Consolo, Italy, will not stand for re-election at the LEN Congress in Zürich on September 28th after 18 years as President of LEN. The candidate to succeed Consolo is Nory Kruchten, 64, of Luxembourg who has been Treasurer and member of the LEN Bureau since 1992. Bartolo Consolo, also Honorary Secretary of FINA, will remain a member of the LEN Bureau for another four years as Immediate Past President. The LEN Bureau is to be increased from 15 to 17 members in Zürich, and instead of two Vice Presidents as in the past, there is now to be five Vice Presidents in office assigned to special tasks. Sven Egil Folvik of Norway stands for re-election as Secretary, and Dr Christa Thiel of Germany stands for election as Treasurer. Candidates for the five Vice President spots are the two current position holders Gennady Aleshin (Russia) and Francis Luyce (France), as well as Dimitris Diathesopoulos (Greece), Tamas Gyarfas (Hungary) and Erik van Heijningen (Netherlands) for the newly created positions. LEN plans to hold annual European Championships in Diving from 2009. Until this year, Diving has been a part of the European Championships together with Swimming, Open Water Swimming and Synchronised Swimming every two years (on even years). In the odd years now, additional European Diving Championships are to replace the “Arena Diving Champions Cup”. In Zürich, the LEN Bureau will also allocate the 2010 European Championships in Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming and Open Water Swimming. Kruchten- “A fantastic event in a beautiful city” Dubrovnik (pps) The 2008 European Open Water Swimming Championships proved a great success for the European Swimming Federation (LEN). Held separately from the European Swimming, Diving and Synchronised Swimming Championships for the first time since 1993, the event in Dubrovnik boasted a new record participation of 111 swimmers representing 22 LEN Member Federations. LEN Treasurer Nory Kruchten (LUX) drew a positive conclusion: “We express our gratefulness to the Organising Committee, the City of Dubrovnik and the Croatian Swimming Federation. We have come a long way, and yet we have a long way ahead of us to consolidate the new events. The swimmers’ response to the 5km time trial format and the team event was overwhelmingly positive. I think we will keep it for the 2010 Europeans. The increased interest in the 25km has led to more competition and new medal winners. This development is good for the sport.” Edith van Dijk (NED) and Thomas Lurz (GER) were awarded the OMEGA watches for best female and male swimmer of the 2008 Open Water Swimming European Championships. Italy finished at the top in the nations ranking with 182 points followed by Russia (176) and Germany (154). Italy also came first in the medal table with 3 gold - 1 silver - 2 bronze and a total of 6 medals. Germany was second with 1-3-3/7 ahead of Russia with 1-2-2/5. Edith van Dijk ended her long and outstandingly successful international career in Dubrovnik although without winning another medal finishing fourth in all three individual events. The 35-year-old Dutchwoman is the most decorated 25km female swimmer of all times. Since the 1997 European Championships in Seville, she has won no fewer than four World (2000-2003) and one European title (2002) plus a further five World and European medals. The Croatian Swimming Federation will also host LEN’s last event in 2008, the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka in December.
